If two are . . . and one is not, then it is not a ’set‘.
(2025, Netherlands)

Made for the self-initiated group exhibition ‘Please RSVP’ at the______servers.

A group exhibition about pleonasms—the curious, the attendant, the superfluous act of repetition that sneaks into language and meaning. In a world fueled by efficiency, pleonasms represent something that doesn’t quite fit the system with their excessiveness, but they reveal something essential; a desire to reinforce, to underline, to return to the point of departure again.
“End result.” Redundant or unnecessary? Yes. But also kind of revealing.

The object of the game is to identify a SET of 3 cards. Each card has four features, which can vary as follows:

(A) SYMBOLS: Each card contains ovals, squiggles or diamonds;
(B) COLORS: The symbols are red, green or purple;
(C) NUMBER: Each card contains one, two or three symbols;
(D) SHADING: The symbols are either solid, open or striped.

A SET consists of 3 cards in which each of the card’s features, looked at one-by-one, are the same on each card, or, are different on each card. All of the features must separately satisfy this rule. In other words: shape must be either the same on all 3 cards, or different on each of the 3 cards; color must be either the same on all 3 cards, or different on each of the 3, etc.
